NKBA STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION

As a National Kitchen and Bath Association Student Member, I had the opportunity to participate  in the 2021 NKBA Texas Gulf Chapter Student Design Competition. Students were required to design a Kitchen for a multigenerational family.

This kitchen is designed to be the heart of the house for the Laghari/Miller family. A place where the family can gather and spend quality time by eating and cooking while looking at their beautiful back yard and the surrounded area through large windows and doors that connect the interior with the exterior allowing a home of abundant natural light.

This kitchen design followed all the NKBA design parameters and requirements. I had the honor to received a recognition for the "Best in Show" kitchen design.

IDEC STUDENT COMPETITION

SFA University gave the students the opportunity to participate in the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) Student Design Competition. We worked on teams to create and design a new way of living, working, and gathering out of three shipping containers for a self-supporting Navajo textile artist living with life partner who works as a ‎photojournalist for the local newspaper.

The design concept reflects the Navajo cultural heritage in modern living. The design is inspired by the Hogan House of Navajo heritage. The interior layout allows occupants to maximize gathering spaces with large windows for natural light. The commercial building made of one shipping container includes an office with photography space, and a maker space to create Navajo textiles and art. The other two containers form the house and living space.

Every aspect of the house and commercial space is designed to be flexible according COVID-19 Pandemic considerations, easy cleanable materials and fixtures, natural sources of ventilation, and natural material choices to support sustainability and green living.
